→ It Gets Better: Parents of Transgender Youth Speak Out (Video)

cassket:

In the first It Gets Better video of its kind, parents of transgender youth are talking to other parents, and letting them know that it gets better.

“Those early days were very difficult,” says Katherine, mom to an 18-year-old trans girl. “I was scared, I felt alone, I felt somehow responsible for having done this to my child.”

One of the things I find so touching about this video is that some of the parents’ advice really goes out to all parents, not just those struggling with their children’s gender issues.

“Our advice to you is to love and support your child. And to find support for yourself,” the video urges.

That pretty much sums up parenting in a nutshell, doesn’t it? I mean, my kids don’t have gender issues, but they are all definitely quirky. And with two on the autism spectrum, I’ve definitely learned that loving them and accepting them for who they are, and finding support for myself, are the keys to a happy family.

After getting support from other parents, Katherine says her child is  ”so much happier now that we’ve accepted her for who she is.”
